The education ministry encompasses Jesuit

owned and operated schools as well as affiliated Ignatian schools.

GLIMPSES OF HAZARIBAG JESUIT MISSION'S / EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH TO THE POOR

Except for two self financed schools for the children of middle class families in the towns of Bokaro Steel City and Hazaribag, the rest of the educational institutions, i.e. one university college, one primary teachers\' education college, 14 high schools, 7 middle schools, 13 primary schools and numerous small village schools, are all being supported by funds from well wishers to educate children of poor families. Involved in this effort to uplift the poor, especially the tribals and dalits, are 36 Jesuits, 39 Religious women, 580 lay men and women who are educating 20,880 students. Let us look in particular at the educational outreach to the Santhal and Oraon tribals and the dalits.

THE SANTHALS

 Biggest tribal group in Jharkhand State. Only 33% literate.
 We are educating 4250 students in 5 schools, 575 girls and 1154 boys in hostels.
 9 Jesuits, 8 Nuns, 84 lay teachers involved.
 Rs.1500 per student for annual school fees and Rs. 1730 for annual hostel fees needed as subsidy.

THE ORAONS

✧ Second biggest tribal group in Jharkhand, 50% literate.
✧ 2 high schools, 3 middle schools with 5014 students.
✧ 1 recently started University College in a backward tribal area.
✧ Annual subsidy per student needed Rs. 2410

THE DALITS (THE OPPRESSED PEOPLE)

✧ Poorest group economically, educationally. Very many day labourers.
✧ 11% of the state dalits, 37% literate.
✧ Educating 4680 students in 2 high schools, 7 village primary schools, many non formal schools.
✧ 4 Jesuits, 4 Nuns and 84 lay teachers involved.
✧ Annual subsidy needed: Rs.1860 per student for school fees; Rs.3313 for hostel fees.
